Obituary

CATHERINE SMEGO, 91, US Navy Veteran

Catherine Smego passed away peacefully on January 20, 2024.  Catherine graduated from Saint Peter's School of Nursing in 1954 and began her career serving in the United States Navy at the rank of Ensign in the Nurses Corp.  In 1956 she married her beloved husband, Frank Smego; they moved to Lockport to build their life and family together. Catherine dedicated her accomplished nursing career in Obstetrics to the care of mothers and babies at Silver Cross Hospital.  Her dedication to her career led her graduation from the College of St. Francis with a Bachelorette degree in 1985. Colleagues always described Catherine as a dedicated, compassionate, and caring professional.

As a devoted Catholic she proudly served as a member of the Order of Martha, supported many fundraising efforts at her church, throughout the community, and internationally.  Her greatest joy was caring for her family, the smiles and hugs from her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant more to her than any riches the world could provide.

Preceded in death by her dear husband Francis "Frank" Smego.

Survived by loving children, Francis (Gayle Wagner) Smego, Cyndee (Kenneth) Levy, Michael (Kelly) Smego and Patrick (Susan) Smego; cherished grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 3; dear aunt of many nieces and nephews.
