"Joe"

Age 90, of Lockport passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Girard, IL, and a resident of Lockport since 1969. Graduate of Illinois State University in 1958 with a B.S. in Education and in 1961 with an M.S. in Education. He started his career teaching at Gardener-South Wilmington High School, then became a Guidance Counselor at Batavia High School where he also coached basketball and track, Guidance Director at Wilmington High School, Assistant Superintendent of Valley View School District 365U, and retired as Director of Special Education in 1993 after many dedicated years. Member of Lockport Rotary Club, serving as president for two terms.  Recipient of the Redwood Rotarian of the Year twice and was honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement award twice. In his spare time Joe enjoyed traveling and watching basketball.

Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Sarah (nee Lynch) Coverdill; and one grandson, Jackson McKibben.

Survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carol (nee Sawdon) Coverdill; three devoted children, Kathy (Don) Russell of Fishers, IN, Kirk (Melissa) Coverdill of IA, and Michael Coverdill of Lockport; two cherished grandchildren, Kalie (Dani) Coverdill, and Evan (Brianna) Coverdill; one adored great granddaughter, Alice Flynn; and a brother, Richard (late Rose) Coverdill of CT. In lieu of flowers memorials to Lightways Hospice or St. Dennis Church in Joe's name would be greatly appreciated.

Prayers will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, in the O'Neil Funeral Home Chapel 1105 E. 9th St. Lockport, IL 60441 at 9:30am proceeding to St. Dennis Catholic Church Lockport for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Entombment following Mass at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Romeoville, IL. Visitation in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from 4:00pm until 7:00pm.
