Mary Doris
"Sugie" Rigoni
Jun 6, 1929 — Feb 23, 2024
Lockport
Mary Doris "Sugie" Rigoni
(Née Carroll)
Sugie was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister & wife during her wonderful 94 years of life. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, February 23, 2024. She was born & raised in Houston, TX. When she was a sweet little girl, her uncles gave her the nickname "Sugar" which would eventually become the name she carried for the rest of her life, known to most as Mama Sug. Sugie moved to Lockport in 1942 when she was thirteen with her mother, father, & three sisters. Their father referred to them as the "four little women". She attended St. Francis (1942-1944) & Lockport Township High School (1943-1947). After high school, Sugie worked at Texaco like her father. Not long after starting LTHS, she met her future husband, Leroy Rigoni. Sugie & Leroy married in 1953 at St. Dennis Catholic Church where she was a parishioner for her adult life. Sug & Lee went on to have five sons, whom she loved fiercely. She was their Cub Scout Leader, school librarian, & biggest cheerleader. Through the years, Leroy's work brought them on a handful of adventures to Florida, Texas, & a year abroad in Italy. However, Sug always came home to her family in Lockport. They were married 44 years before Leroy passed away. Outside of motherhood, Sug was a devoted member of the Lockport Woman's Club for 50 years where she sat on committees & spent her time volunteering. She was an avid member of the Red Hat Ladies & part of a Dominos Club where she was known to win a dollar or two. Sug's social circle was as big as her heart. She loved to read, sew, macramé, cross stitch, garden, crochet, knit, cook, & especially enjoyed teaching her grandchildren her hobbies. She also enjoyed traveling with her sisters to Washington, Texas, California, Florida, West Point, Mexico, a Caribbean cruise, & China. During the summer you could expect to find Sugie out by her pool with any number of welcomed visitors. She had tended the most beautiful, vibrant flower beds one could imagine. Christmas was made magical by Mama Sug with endless decorations, treats, & traditions that will be passed down for generations, like burying the newest family additions in wrapping paper. Sug had a gift in giving love to those closest to her in the exact way they needed, without ever asking for it. She accepted everyone as they were and treated them as her own. She was a kind, loving soul and will be deeply missed by all who knew & loved her.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leroy Rigoni (1997); one grandson in infancy, Lee Douglas Rigoni; parents, Guy and Ruth Genevieve (Née Evans) Carroll; and one sister, Betty Blessing.
Survived by her five devoted sons, Jeff (Jeri) Rigoni, Mark (Jennifer) Rigoni, Doug (Jodi) Rigoni, Chris (Carla Ordonez) Rigoni, and Bruce Rigoni; sixteen grandchildren, Taryn (Patrick) White, Jeffrey Paul Rigoni, Jessica (Dan) Martino, Mark "Deuce" Rigoni Jr., Sally Rigoni, Giavanna Rigoni, Rocco Rigoni, Tessa Rigoni, Melanie Rigoni, Gabriel (Eleanor) Junquera, Daniel Junquera, Vanessa Junquera, Nicholas (David Johnson) Rigoni, Natalie (Trevor) Bowling, John Rigoni, and Bruce Rigoni Jr.; five great grandchildren, Addison White, Graeme White, Enzo Martino, Luca Martino, and Maeve Bowling, & baby Bowling due in June; two sisters, Joan (late Gerald) Varsek, & Joyce (Clark Owens) Sheridan & many nieces & nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials to The Tunnel to Towers Foundation in Sugie's name would be greatly appreciated.
Per Sugie's wishes Cremation Rites were respectfully addressed.
A Memorial Mass celebrating Sugie's life will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024, 10:00am at St. Dennis Catholic Church, 1214 S. Washington St. Lockport, IL 60441.
