Robert M. Vela

Age 69, late of Lockport, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood. Born in Gary Indiana, living in Lockport for 42 years.

A Proud United States Army Veteran. Employed by Caterpillar for over 30 years, retiring in 2005.

Member and supporter of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers Local # 851, where he served as a past President.

Robert was a substitute schoolteacher at multiple schools around the Lockport and Joliet area. He was a coach and a referee /umpire for football, volleyball, wrestling, and softball at multiple locations throughout the county.  An avid sports fan who loved the Cubs, Bears and Bulls. Robert loved playing Euchre with his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. His sense of humor always made everyone around him laugh. Above all else Robert loved spending time with his son Louis, daughter- in- law Dawn, his cherished grandchildren and great-grandson.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan (nee: Safranski 2015); his parents, Lucio and Delores Vela; a brother, Frank Vela; and a sister, Rey Pavy.

Survived by his son, Louis (Dawn) Vela; 3 grandchildren, Brittany Guzman, Marisa Johnson and Nathan Vela; a great grandson, Eli Ramirez; two brothers, Steve and Paul (Susan)Vela; four sisters, Teresa (Rick) Pavy, Louise (Don) Vela–Ray, Christine (Jerry) Happ and Toni (Tim) Ellis; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Per Roberts wishes cremation rites were respectfully addressed and a service celebrating his life will be held at a later date.
