Ronald Wayne Smiles Jr.
“Ronnie” • “Bulldog”
February 16, 1969 – October 14, 2026
A Hero Never Forgotten. A Defender for All. A Heart of a Lion. With hearts overflowing with love, profound sorrow, and everlasting gratitude for a life so extraordinarily lived, we announce the passing of Ronald Wayne Smiles Jr., affectionately known to all as “Ronnie” and proudly known as “Bulldog.” On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., at the age of 57, Ronnie valiantly earned his wings and embarked upon his next greatest adventure. Cradled in the loving arms of his devoted wife, surrounded by his cherished family and embraced by a lifetime of immeasurable love, Ronnie peacefully answered God’s call home. And while his earthly journey has come to an end, the remarkable legacy of this extraordinary man has only just begun. A husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and cousin. A protector. A Lion. A hero. And above all, a man of unwavering faith.
Preceded in death by his father, Ronald W. Smiles Sr. (2001); his maternal and paternal grandparents; and his aunt, Lynn D'Alberto.
Ronnie leaves behind the love of his life, his devoted wife, Lori Taylor-Smiles, with whom he shared a beautiful love story built upon friendship, laughter, adventure, resilience, and an unbreakable bond. Their journey together was nothing short of extraordinary, proving that some souls are simply destined to find one another. He was the proud and loving father of Jonah Smiles and Genevieve “Evie” Esposito (Nick Brown), whose lives will forever carry the strength, wisdom, humor, and unconditional love he so freely gave. Ronnie is also survived by his beloved mother, Jean Smiles; his remarkable brothers, Wayne (Bridget) Smiles, Jeff (Renee) Smiles, and Greg (Hope) Smiles; his cherished nieces, Bree Smiles (Nic Arocho) and Rylee Smiles (Frank Martinez); his beloved uncle and aunt, Scott and Joyce Schaeffer; his adored godchildren, Grace, Jerry and Belle Szmergalski, his loving friend, Denise Lowe and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins who will forever cherish his memory.
He was blessed to have a large and loving family whose lives were enriched by his presence and who will carry his laughter, kindness, and unforgettable spirit in their hearts. To his family, Ronnie was so much more than the roles he held. He was their rock, their protector, their greatest comedian, their voice of reason, and often the very reason laughter could be found even in life’s darkest moments. For 28 years, Ronnie proudly served as a decorated and devoted officer of the Lockport Police Department, dedicating his life to protecting others and serving his community with honor, courage, compassion, and an unmistakable sense of duty. Known by his brothers and sisters in blue as “Bulldog,” Ronnie was a force to be reckoned with, a steadfast defender of those who needed him, and a man whose loyalty knew no boundaries. Behind that badge was a heart larger than life. His legendary humor, unforgettable stories, quick wit, and larger-than-life personality will echo through the halls of the Lockport Police Department and the hearts of those who had the privilege of serving alongside him for generations to come. Badge #30 may be retired, but the man behind it will never be forgotten. Ronnie’s commitment to serving others extended far beyond his law enforcement career.
A proud member of the Lockport Moose Lodge, Ronnie treasured friendship, fellowship, and community. Yet one of his proudest and most meaningful accomplishments was his induction into the Lemont Lions Club, following years of dedicated service and support. As the proud Second Vice District Governor’s Partner in Service, Ronnie embraced the spirit of Lionism with enthusiasm, compassion, humor, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. He did not simply wear the title of a Lion. He lived with the heart of one. His belief in service, kindness, fellowship, and lifting others up embodied the very essence of what it means to be a Lion. His roar will forever resonate in the hearts of his fellow Lions and throughout the communities he so dearly loved. But perhaps Ronnie’s greatest legacy was not measured in awards, titles, accomplishments, or years of service. It was measured in the lives he touched, the strangers he helped, the friends he made. The family he fiercely loved. The laughter he created. And the unwavering faith he carried through every season of his life.
Ronnie was a man of God, whose faith was not merely something he spoke about. It was the foundation upon which he lived. Even when faced with the most unimaginable battles, including his courageous fight against cancer, Ronnie never surrendered his spirit, his humor, or his trust in the Lord. He fought with the heart of a warrior, the determination of a Bulldog, and the faith of a man who knew that his life was always in God’s hands. One of Ronnie’s most cherished expressions was: “It’s okay. God has us. He makes no mistakes.” Those words were more than a comforting phrase. They were his testimony. Through every obstacle, every difficult diagnosis, every unexpected turn, and every seemingly impossible challenge, Ronnie remained steadfast in his belief that miracles happen every single day. He never gave in. He never gave up. And he never stopped believing. His journey was one of extraordinary courage, extraordinary love, and extraordinary faith. Ronnie taught us that true strength is not found in never falling, but in rising to face another day with dignity, determination, and grace. He taught us that laughter can survive even the darkest storms. That love is the greatest gift we can give. That service to others is one of life’s highest callings. And that faith is not the absence of fear, but the courage to trust God through it. To know Ronnie was to know laughter. To love Ronnie was to know loyalty. To stand beside Ronnie was to know protection. And to be loved by Ronnie was to experience a gift that will last an eternity. Though our hearts are shattered by his departure, we find comfort in knowing that his suffering has ended, his earthly battles are over, and he has entered the glorious peace of God’s eternal kingdom. We can almost hear that familiar voice, with that unmistakable grin, reassuring us one more time: “It’s okay. God has us.” and Ronnie, we believe you. Your watch has ended, Bulldog. Your battle is won. Your wings have been earned. And your next great adventure has begun.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Smiles family would be greatly appreciated.
