Verna Mae Haas

(Nee Volaj)

Longtime Lockport, IL resident Verna Mae Haas died peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at the age of 86. She passed at her home surrounded by her loving family after a long struggle with cancer. Born and raised in Joliet, Verna moved to Lockport in 1958. For 18 of those years, she was a dedicated employee at Corwin's Drug Store in Lockport. She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing and briefly worked as a nurse.

Verna was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother ("GG"), and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Before her illness, Verna loved to travel, whether it was to Las Vegas, San Francisco, the Wisconsin Dells, or on a handful of cruises. She also enjoyed going out to dinner and shopping. But above all else, she cherished spending time with her family. She also loved the 4-legged members of her family, especially her Bichon Frisé, Shasta, who was her companion for 20 years.

Preceded in death by an infant daughter, Andrea Haas (1975); her parents, Stephen and Helen (Nee Rak) Volaj; four sisters, Margaret Volaj of Joliet, IL, Helen (Joe) Metesh of Crest Hill, IL., Ann (Joe) Viano of Washington, IL., and Elizabeth (Bill) Hurst of Crest Hill, IL.

Survived by her devoted husband of more than 65 years, Norbert Haas; five loving children, Pam (Dan) Castello, Sue (Larry) Mathias, Steven Haas, Tim (fiancé Kim Clark) Haas, and Laurie (Dan) Thomas; 10 adored grandchildren, Amanda (Charlie) Irizarry, Kevin (Megan) Castello, Allison (Brad) Johnson, Julie (Nick Meyer) Mathias, Rebeca Haas, Brendan (fiancé Emily McCann) Haas, Brooklynn (Jared) Jennings, Brody Haas, Natalie Thomas and Gabby Thomas; and nine great grandchildren, Zoe and Sam Irizarry, Callie, Cole and Cade Castello, Nolan and Daphne Johnson, Raelee and Hartlee Jennings; and many loved family members and friends.
